Egypt are winners of the last six African Championships (2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015), and took their total to eight overall after defeating Tunisia at the end of July as tournament hosts in Cairo. At the 2015 World League, Egypt won five of their six Group 3 pool matches to qualify for the final four, which they won after victories over Slovakia and Montenegro in a thrilling five-set final. Egypt ended joint-21st at last year's World Championship and their highest finish in seven previous attempts was joint-13th place in Italy four years earlier. They have competed at the last three World Cups and finished 12th and bottom of the pool in 2011, after a tenth place finish at the 2007 edition. Their best performance in the World Cup was in 1985 when they finished in eighth place.
Other recent results include a joint-11th at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Egypt have a long volleyball history and were the first country to join the African Volleyball Federation. Before Africa had a solid volleyball structure, Egypt competed in the 1955 and 1958 European Championship. They will try to build on their rich history in the coming years. Their youth, junior and Under-23 teams all qualified for their respective world championships in 2013.
