Speraw proud of USA's effort in win over Russia, cites Shoji's fine play

Tokyo, Japan, September 22, 2015 - USA coach John Speraw was delighted that his side claimed victory against Russia after the disappointing loss to Poland on the previous day.

USA coach John Speraw: "I'm proud of the way we responded after yesterday, knowing how great a team Russia is. We are happy to be in a position to win the tournament. Argentina is a tough team. They knocked us out of the world championships last year. We look forward to tomorrow's match. Dealing with Russia's big blockers is a challenge. The team has to adapt in those situations. We can't think too much about and just have to play. Erik Shoji had a great match tonight. Great teams usually have great liberos. He is in his first quadrennial with us and has done and outstanding job in this tournament."

Russia coach Vladimir Alekno: "I don't have much to say about tonight's match. The USA is superior to us."

USA captain David Lee: "I'm very happy with the result. We bounced back well after last night's loss. We kept our focus from the start. Our serve was too good for the Russian players. We look forward to the Argentina match tomorrow. Coach told us before the match that the tournament was not over. Our fate was in our hands and if we could win the next two games we could qualify for the Olympics."

Russia captain Dmitriy Muserskiy: "We lost and there is no possibility to qualify for the Olympics here. We have to qualify for Olympics in another way. USA was superior to us. We will think aobut preparing for Japan tomorrow. I can't say any more now."
