Argentina were knocked out of the 2015 World League by eventual champions France in Group 2’s Final Four in Bulgaria. At the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, Argentina won the gold medal when they defeated Brazil 3-2 in the final. They finished seventh in the 2011 World Cup after winning five of 11 matches, matching the positions they achieved in 2007 and 1995 when 12 teams also competed. Their previous best finish was fifth in 1985, although only eight teams took part. Now they will try to improve in what is their sixth appearance at the tournament. They had to settle for joint-11th place in last year's World Championship after finishing sixth in their second round pool.
The Argentina team made their international debut at the South American Championship in Rio de Janeiro in 1951, achieving fourth place. They competed in their first World Championship in 1960 in the same city, where they finished 11th. Since then they have competed in 10 World Championships, with a bronze medal-winning campaign on home territory in 1982 being their best effort. Argentina won the bronze medal at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, their best performance in six appearances at the Olympic Games. Their medal haul from the men's tournament at the Pan American Games is now six – two gold and four bronzes.
