Overview

Team profile

Iran

At the start of the season at the 2015 World League, Iran came third in Group 1’s Pool B in which United States and Poland progressed to the next round. However, they took encouragement after defeating every team in their pool, including a double sweep of USA in Russia. This is Iran’s third World Cup appearance. They finished ninth in 2011 and 11th in the 1991 edition.

Although they still have some way to go, Iran are on the rise and can present a good challenge to the world's elite teams. They were sixth at the 2014 World Championship in Poland, where a strong Russian side defeated them. Iran became Asian champions for a second time in 2013, having made the breakthrough in 2011. They will be hoping to pick up where they left off in 2014 when they defeated Japan to win the gold medal at the Asian Games in Incheon, Korea. The history of volleyball in Iran dates back to the early 1920s when it was played at colleges. The national team made their competitive debut in the 1950s. While they have yet to qualify for an Olympic Games, their ascent is undeniable. They have featured in the past three World Championships.

Coach

Kovac Slobodan

Kovac Slobodan

Serbian Slobodan Kovac was named head coach of Iran's men's team in 2014. He then led them to a fourth-place finish in Group 1 of the 2014 World League. They followed that on by finishing third in Pool B of Group 1 in 2015. Kovac, who takes a more abstract view of coaching, feels that his role as head coach calls for him to act as a psychologist, teacher and father figure in addition to tactician. He was awarded 2009 and 2010 Serbian Coach of the Year honours and led domestic club Radnicki Kragujevac to two national championships. Kovac also coached the Umbria Volley club to A1 promotion in the 2011/12 season in Italy, where he was later named 2013 Coach of the Year.
