Tokyo – a world-renowned metropolis and the center of Japan’s economy, politics, and culture – is a city that has enjoyed a long history of prosperity. Formerly known as Edo, it has been the de facto seat of government since 1603 when Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu made the city his headquarters. It is currently the seat of the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese government.
Tokyo has a strong international sporting history, becoming the first Asian city to host the summer Olympic Games in 1964. Tokyo has seen its fair share of the FIVB volleyball events, having being a host city for the 2005, 2009 and 2013 FIVB World Grand Champions Cup and for the 2010 Women's World Championship. The city also hosted the FIVB World Grand Prix Group 1 Finals in 2014 and was the site of the FIVB World Congress in 2006.

Built to house the swimming competitions at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the spectacular Yoyogi Gymnasium features a unique, high-tension suspension roof. It has held many volleyball competitions, including the 2010 Women’s World Championship final and is designated as one of the 100 architectural landmarks of Tokyo.
